An internal view of Rugby's No 1 signal cabin and some of the 185 levers used to operate points, signals, and point locking mechanisms. The illuminated track diagrams for each direction under the control of the signal cabin can be seen suspended above the levers. In addition to the two signalmen, a booking boy was responsible for the telephones, and according to Iain Mackenzie in his book Great Central Signalman, his task was so demanding that the normal Train Register Book was not kept other than for exceptional circumstances. He only recorded the locomotives as they entered or left the sheds, and wiring to Control and other interested parties the various freight movements.
