British Railways built Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 No 35022 'Holland America Line' is seen going through its tests. The locomotive is in its original 'un-rebuilt' form and was tested three times at Rugby - from March to October 1952, and from March to May 1953 and December 1953 to January 1954. Several sections of cladding had been removed to allow access for instrumentation to measure temperatures & pressures. If the year when the photograph was taken is 1953, then the locomotive was fitted with a boiler which did not include thermic siphons. Built Eastleigh works in October 1948, No 35022 was re-built in June 1956 with streamline casing removed, chain valve gear replaced with Walschaerts etc and in this form ran until May 1966 when it was withdrawn from 70G Weymouth shed.
