Ex-LMS 8P 4-6-2 Princess Coronation Class No 46256 'Sir
William Stanier FRS' stands outside Rugby No 1 shed with David Bailey and his
driver in the cab. FRS stands for Fellow of the Royal Society. The Royal
Society is a Fellowship of 1400 outstanding individuals who represent all areas
of science, engineering and medicine and is the oldest scientific academy in
continuous existence. Built by Crewe works in December 1947, the last month of
the LMS' existence, No 46256 was the penultimate member of the class designed
by Sir William Stanier and remained in service until October 1964 when it was
withdrawn from 5A Crewe North shed and was scrapped in December 1964 by
Cashmores of Great Bridge. HG Ivatt had modified the design of this and the
last class member, No 46257 'City of Salford', by replacing the trailing truck
located beneath the cab with a new design, one which required a shortened side
cab sheet.
