The locomotive was one of thirty members of the LNWR's 1185 Class which was designed by Charles Bowen-Cooke as a heavy duty shunter and introduced in 1911. All of the class passed into LMS ownership in 1923 with eight surviving into British Railways ownership in 1948. British Railways numbered the locomotives as No 47875 to No 47896 (with gaps in the running numbers). Shunting tank engines. They were built at Crewe works during 1911 to 1917 and were intended for duties formerly needing two locomotives and were essentially a tank version of the 'G' class 0-8-0s.
