View of an unknown locomotive being coaled at Rugby's LMS
coaling plant built in the 1930s. The LMS had identified coaling as one of the
major areas of inefficiency with much time and effort being invested in manual
labour coaling locomotives. Mechanisation offered considerable benefits and by
limiting the coal capacity of the coaling plant's bunker to a depot's 24 hour
supply the capital costs could be kept down. The coaling plant only needed a
single attendant to manage the process of replenishing the coal each day into
the two 150 ton bunkers. They were based in a kiosk office (which can be seen
on the left at the other end of the platform).
