An unidentified ex-LMS 8P 4-6-2 Coronation Class locomotive at the head of a down express passes the up marshalling sidings in the early 1960s. The locomotive is an ex-streamliner, known colloquially as a 'Semi', as is evident by the absence of the footplate in front of the cylinders. Initially, locomotives that had previously been streamlined could be readily recognised by a sloping top to the front of the smokebox; however all were eventually re-equipped with rounded smokeboxes. It was the sloping top led to the train-spotters' nickname of 'Semi' being shorthand for semi-streamlined. The last one to retain the sloping top was 46246 in 1959. The start of the electrification through Rugby is visible with the steel posts being erected either side of the main lines through the station.
