Ex-LNWR 4-6-0 'Claughton' Class No 6012 departs Rugby with the down Sunny South Express service. The Sunny South Express ran from Liverpool and Manchester to Brighton and Eastbourne. The trains were hauled by LNWR and London, Brighton & South Coast Railway locomotives. The service operated from 1904 until after the Second World War and carried holiday passengers from the midlands and the north of England to the south coast. The express passed through Birmingham, Rugby and the west side of London. The Claughton class of locomotive was a near miss in design suffering from several problems not least an under performing boiler and cylinders. Built as LNWR No 152 at Crewe works in March 1921, No 6012 was renumbered by the LMS in June 1926 which it carried until it was withdrawn to be rebuilt as Patriot Class locomotive, No 5510 in August 1932, in which form it remained until it was finally withdrawn in June 1962 from 24J Lancaster shed to be scrapped by Crewe works.
