Ex-LMS 4-6-0 rebuilt Royal Scot No 46149 'The Middlesex Regiment' is seen approached Rugby station whilst at the head of a down express

Ex-MR 0-6-0 Johnson 2F No 58218 brings a freight service off the Market Harborough line as ex-LMS 4-6-2 8P No 46236 'City of Bradford' heads a down express into Rugby on 23rd April 1959. Built by Beyer Peacock Ltd in December 1883, No 58218 was to remain in service until July 1962 when it was withdrawn from 21B Bescot shed to be scrapped. The Princess Coronation Class locomotive was built in streamlined form as LMS No 6236 by Crewe works in July 1939 and painted in crimson lake, with banding in gold lined with vermilion and black. Due to wartime considerations the locomotive received a plain black livery without any lining in April 1944. Renumbered by British Railways as 46236, the streamlining was removed to aid maintenance by providing better access to parts. For a period of time the smokebox still retained its sloping top which led to many enthusiasts christening them 'Semis' implying they were in semi streamlined form, which patently they were not. Under British Railways ownership the locomotive received three different liveries: British Railways Lined Green in November 1954; British Railways Lined Maroon livery in July 1958; and LMS Lined Maroon livery in November 1959 which it carried until March 1964 when it was withdrawn from 12A Kingmoor shed in Carlisle to be scrapped.
