Ex-LNWR Claughton Class 4-6-0 No 5956 is piloting ex-LNWR
Claughton Class 4-6-0 No 5995 with a long Down express on the Rugby avoiding
line at the north end of the station. On the left is Rugby No 5 signal cabin
and to the right, several bracket signals in view - distant arms have vertical
stripes, not chevrons. British Thomson Houston works are on the left, behind
the horseboxes. The roofs of more horseboxes can be seen in the right
foreground. David Murray writes 'the Claughtons are on the Down Fast. The
coach on the adjacent line at the rear of the train, is parked on the end of
the Independent. The Independent was the siding adjacent to the
station between the Down Fast and Down Goods. At the south end of the
Independent there was a horse dock which was accessed by a road which ran
underneath the Down Goods'. Bob Haddon writes, 'Just looking at the BTH
buildings on the left, I used to possess a book with all building numbers but
gave it my Aunt as it also gave employee names with her dads name in (my
granddad). Building 25 seems to be missing, that's where they built the first
computers during WW2' David Murray adds 'the crews shunting
Hunters wagon works benefited from a free perk - bags of free kindling!
Presumably scrap wood from wagons under repair there and very useful in the
days when homes were lit by coal fires'.
