British Railways Type 4 No D212 'Aureol' stands in one of the former Leicester bays at the north end of the station

British Railways Type 4 No D212 'Aureol' stands in one of the former Leicester bays located at the north end of the station circa 1964-6. The early diesel locomotives were considered to be hazardous to lineside staff as they were much quieter than their steam powered counterparts. To aid visibility the lower part of the front end of the locomotive was painted yellow (as above) but this was still not sufficient so the full yellow front was adopted. Built in May 1959 by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry, D212 was renumbered by British Railways as No 40012 in February 1974 when it was reclassified under the TOPS scheme as a Class 40 locomotive. It was officially retired from revenue service in February 1985, however for a very brief time, from May 1985, the locomotive entered departmental stock as No 97407 but it was soon retired being withdrawn from service in April 1986 to be preserved.
