The unique Riddles BR Standard 7P Pacific No 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' is seen on a three coach train heading north

Now preserved, the unique Riddles BR Standard 4-6-2 Pacific No 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' on a three coach train heading north. The 'Duke' was built because of the demise of Stanier 4-6-2 No 46202 'Princess Anne' in the Harrow accident which had only been running for a few months after being converted from Stanier's experimental Turbomotive. The ' Duke of Gloucester' was built at Crewe works in May 1954 and served BR only for a few years before being withdrawn from Crewe North shed in November 1962 and stored at Crewe until August 1967. It was decided by BR that it was only a scaled up version of Britannia and therefore did not warrant to be preserved as part of the National Collection and was shipped to Woodhams of Barry for scrap. The two cylinders were removed and sectioned by Crewe works, the first being a trial run the second for display at the Science Museum. The locomotive was delivered by mistake to Cohens for scrapping but fortunately the error was discovered and the locomotive was towed to Barry to eventually be preserved and restored.
