Close up of image 'lnwrrm742' showing the tracks on either side of Rugby's tall No 1 signal cabin which included two sidings. The sidings performed the same function as those at the northern end of the station, namely providing refuge for failed wagons, enabling the marshalling of passenger stock and stabling of light engines. When the third station was opened in 1885 some 120 trains passed daily with only one not calling at Rugby. In addition, at peak periods, a freight train was dispatched from Rugby every nine minutes. The station's layout needed therefore to accommodate other types of traffic movement without disrupting primary traffic.
