Ex-LMS 4-6-0 Converted Royal Scot class No 46159 'The Royal Airforce' is diverted on to the Northampton line

Ex-LMS 4-6-0 Converted Royal Scot class No 46159 'The Royal Airforce' is diverted as it takes the Northampton line instead of passing under the viaduct. Number 46159 was originally built at Derby works to Lot 73 in August 1930 and remained in service until November 1962 when it was withdrawn from Willesden shed to be scrapped in March 1963 at Crewe works. Robert Stephenson writes, 'the locomotive carries the reporting number W56 which was the morning semi-fast from Llandudno to Euston. In summer 1956 it left Llandudno at 9:10am (SX), 9:05 (SO) and arrived in Euston after no less than 18 stops around 3:40pm. Amongst its many stops was Northampton (Castle), this being one of the very few trains travelling the Trent valley to call there. A prospective traveller from Llandudno to Euston could, alternatively, leave at 10:00am (SO) and arrive in Euston at 3:10pm, so I would imagine there would be very few passengers making the whole journey on W56. This train was a Camden 7P duty for a long period, the loco working through, having worked the previous day's” Welshman”, 11:15am Euston to North Wales, and stabling overnight in North Wales. Train reporting numbers were carried on days of peak demand to aid signalmen, mostly summer Saturdays and Bank Holidays.'
