Ex-LMS Fowler/Stanier Converted 4-6-0 Royal Scot class No M6138 'The London Irish Rifleman' passes through station on the outside avoiding lines on a down express on 7th May 1948. Initially the newly formed British Railways Board allocated a letter to the running number to differentiate between locomotives of its different regions when carrying the same number, in this instance the letter 'M' for Midland. Number M6138 became 46138 when the renumbering of different regions followed the simple practice of adding to their numbers a given number which in the case of former LMS engines was 40,000. Number M6138 was built in its original parallel boiler form in October 1927 and was later rebuilt in its tapered boiler form by Stanier before it was withdrawn in February 1963 from Carlisle (Upperby) shed and scrapped in May 1963 at Crewe works.
