With steam shooting in the air from its safety valves ex-LMS 4-6-0 Stanier Black 5 doubleheads ex-LMS 8P 4-6-2 Coronation class Pacific No 6239 'City of London' on a down express on 7th May 1948. Built by Derby works in January 1944 No 5493 remained in service until January 1968 when it was withdrawn from Kingmoor shed, Carlisle for scrapping in April by Drapers Ltd of Hull. Number 6239 was built in streamlined condition by Crewe works in August 1939 and remained in service until withdrawn from Crewe North shed in October 1964 to be scrapped in January 1965 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
