Ex-LNWR 4-4-0 Precursor class No 5283 'Brougham' pilots ex-LNWR Claughton class No 5909 'Charles N Lawrence' on the up Royal Scot train

Ex-LNWR 4-4-0 Precursor class No 5283 'Brougham' pilots ex-LNWR Claughton class No 5909 'Charles N Lawrence' on the up Royal Scot train on 26th Aug 1933. Its presumed that the allocated locomotive normally a Royal Scot class locomotive, had failed requiring the two former top link locomotives to take the Royal Scots place. The 4-6-0 Claughton had a nominal 5XP rating and consequently could have just about handled the train by itself. However the locomotive failed to live up to expectations and despite many modifications did not ever achieve the promise of its predecessors. Built at Crewe in August 1907 as LNWR No 2011 it was renumbered LMS No 5283 in August 1927 and remained in service until withdrawn in 1936. The 4-6-0 Claughton was built at Crewe in June 1913 as LNWR 2046 and received its LMS No 5909 in March 1927 and was retired from service in 1935.
