Ex-LNWR 3P 4-4-0 George the V class No 5320 and ex-LNWR 3P 4-4-0 George the V class No 5339 are seen standing at the head of a down express by Rugby No 4 Signal Box

Ex-LNWR 3P 4-4-0 George the V class No 5320 and ex-LNWR 3P 4-4-0 George the V class No 5339 are seen standing at the head of a down express by Rugby No 4 Signal Box on 11th July 1931. The crew from the pilot engine No 5320 are seen dismounting presumably to talk to the crew of the train engine No 5339. Unlike the GWR which always placed the train at the front of a pair of locomotives working a service, the LMS always coupled the train engine to the coaching stock. The pilot engine No 5320 was built at Crewe works as LNWR No 2663 in July 1910 being allocated its LMS running number in March 1927 which it carried until it was withdrawn in February 1936. The train engine, No 5339, was built at Crewe works as LNWR No 2168 receiving its LMS running number in December 1927 which it carried until April 1937 when it was withdrawn from service.
