Ex-LNWR 4P 4-6-0 Prince of Wales class No 25656 'Shark' is seen standing with an unidentified Stanier 2-6-4T in the Stafford bay at Rugby on 4th June 1938. The Prince of Wales locomotive is carrying a Class 2 lamp code which the LMS categorised as: an 'Ordinary passenger train, or break-down van train not going to clear the line. Branch passenger train (where authorised). Rail motor or motor train with engine leading (When running with driving compartment leading rail motors or motor trains will carry the headlamp on the same bracket as used for the tail lamp).'. Built as LNWR No 1084 at Crewe works in January 1916, No 25656 received the LMS running number '5656' in March 1926 which was later changed by adding 20,000 to make way for the Fowler and Stanier standard locomotives which it retained until August 1938 when it was withdrawn from service to be scrapped by Crewe works.
