Ex-LNWR 2-4-0 Precedent class No 5018 'Talavera' is seen
shunting empty stock in the southbound bays whilst on pilot duties at Rugby
station on 26th March 1932. Built at Crewe works in February 1890 as LNWR No
1672, No 5018 was a member of the class made famous by LNWR No 790 'Hardwicke'
during the 1880s Races to the North which was fought between the railway
companies operating the West Coast - which included the LNWR - and those
operating the East Coast routes between London to Edinburgh. Hardwicke has
subsequently been preserved as part of the national collection. The fate of No
5018 was not so fortunate because following acquiring its LMS running number in
March 1928 it was withdrawn in December 1932 to be scrapped by Crewe works just
a few months after this photograph was taken.
