Looking towards London along the down platform as a train leaves the southern section of the platform. The scissors crossover was a feature on both the up and down platforms and enabled trains to arrive or leave from independent of whether or not the other part of the platform was occupied. This ability to handle two trains simultaneously made the station one of the longest in the country.
