LNWR 2-4-0 'Big Jumbo' No 1531 'Cromwell' stands outside in the shed's yard circa 1910

LNWR 2-4-0 'Big Jumbo' No 1531 'Cromwell' stands outside in the shed's yard circa 1910. Officially described as the 'Improved Precedent Class' they were originally designed by FW Webb for express passenger work. A total of one hundred and sixty-six were built in batches by Crewe works between 1887 and 1897 with two further additions being built in 1898 and 1901. Officially they were rebuilds of ninety-six Newton Class and eighty Precedent Class locomotives though in reality they were 'accountancy' rebuilds so that the cost of their construction could be charged to revenue and not to capital accounts. When 'rebuilt' they retained the numbers and names of their predecessors which were, in accordance to LNWR standard practice random and not sequential, resulting in the numbering system continuing this dysfunctional system.
