Close up of image 'lnwrrm946' showing one of the two crew
pushing hard on the turntable's pole in order to turn the locomotive. This was
one of the two 40 foot turntables initially provided at Rugby and would be
replaced within two or three years by a larger 55 feet diameter turntable. The
newer turntables were designed to be operated by using the locomotive's vacuum.
Around the above turntable are slats fixed into the ground in order to help the
crew to stop slipping when pushing. The need to correctly balance the
locomotive by distributing its weight evenly across the turntable was crucial
in helping the crew to avoid too much exertion.
