View of a long line of ex-LNWR freight locomotives stored adjacent to the coal stack by the Engine Repair Workshop circa 1934. The locomotives are standing on the line which would have been used by the coal wagons when the stacks were built. The coal stacks were built using the same skills as those used to build 'dry walling' in the countryside namely forming an external wall out of large interlocking blocks and infilling with variable size coal lumps. Coal stored in this manner had a limited shelf life and therefore the shed's management needed to record dates when built so that the coal would be used within a specified time period.
