Ex-LNWR 5XP 4-6-0 Claughton class No 5964 Patriot stands on shed coaled and ready for its next turn of service

Ex-LNWR 5XP 4-6-0 Claughton class No 5964, named 'Patriot' in remembrance of the LNWR employees who died in the Great War, stands on shed circa 1923. Built at Crewe works in January 1920 it was given the poignant LNWR No 1914 which it retained until June 1926 when the LMS No 5964 was applied. It remained in service until July 1934 when it was retired from service for scrapping at Crewe. The Fowler 5XP replacements when built were unofficially described as 'Baby Scots' because they were in essence using the Royal Scot frames etc with an enlarged Claughton boiler. When Claughton class No 5964 was scrapped the name was transferred to LMS No 5500 thereby continuing to honour the men of the 1914-18 war and providing a class name.
