LMS 4-6-0 large boilered Claughton class No 6017 'Breadalbane' is seen standing under the Ash Plant at Rugby

LMS 4-6-0 large boilered Claughton class No 6017 'Breadalbane' is seen standing under the Ash Plant at Rugby. The Ash Plant appears to be a twin type with two roads underneath the structure. The ash was dropped into tubs under the locomotive or alongside it which in turn were emptied into a 'V' shaped pit with a hoist at its lowest point. When full the hoist was raised to the top and discharged into an Ash Bunker for later discharging in to wagons. The use of water sprays was essential to keep the amount of dust down to a minimum.

Number 6017 was built at Crewe works as LNWR No 169 in April 1921, named in March 1923, renumbered by the LMS in November 1926, and finally withdrawn in October 1940 for scrapping at Crewe works.
