This class of locomotives were designed by Samuel W Johnson and were introduced in 1875. Many of these locomotives were rebuilt by Henry Fowler from 1917 with Belpaire firebox as was No 11221 seen above. Many of the locomotives passed into LMS ownership in 1923 and again like No 11221, into British Railways ownership in 1948. A number of the locomotives lasted in service until the late 1950s, by which time they were the oldest locomotives in regular service on British main lines
