Ex-Midland Railway 0-6-0 2F No 23006 emerges from beneath
Selwyn Road overbridge with a train for Mitchell & Butler's brewery in
1949. At the time the photograph was taken the branch was being worked on the
'One engine in steam' system. This meant that only one locomotive could be
allowed on the line at one time which meant that in the absence of any other
locomotive no accident could occur. In case of a breakdown or accident
preventing the return of the locomotive, there was provision in the regulations
allowing a second engine to enter the branch but only with special permission
and supervision.
