From Hagley Road station the descending gradient was 1 in 66 and therefore the risk of runaways was a real possibility. The configuration of the sand drag and catch points was to allow the latter to direct the runaway wagon into the rail being utilised as the sand drag. This would then slow down the wagons that they would not continue on and into the path of an approaching train.
