A circa 1870 view of Sutton Coldfield station's departure platform showing the new refreshment room on the left. The turntable is partly visible on the left whilst the goods shed is partly visible on the right. The arrival platform, which is devoid of any buildings, is separated from the goods shed on the right by a single set of tracks. On the other side of the arrival platform is another set of tracks indicating that the platform could accommodate two trains simultaneously. The two platforms were connected by a timber 'barrow' crossing upon which a man can be seen standing in the centre of the tracks. The short platform to the left of the refreshment room is a carriage landing dock. The platform face can be seen to have a semicircular recess within which a wagon turntable is situated. The lamppost is probably lit by oil and has been erected in order to provide the crew with light at night when turning the locomotive.
