View of Sutton Coldfield's first station when first built as the terminus of the line from Birmingham via Aston. The train is made up of seven coaches in total. There are six four-wheel coaches, the two end coaches being Third Class with brakes, whilst the four in the centre are First/Second Class composite carriages. The last coach is a much older type of unknown origin. The photograph has been specially posed and includes all levels of LNWR personnel. Nearest the and camera carrying his top hat is thought to be the line superintendent. To the left and behind him in full uniform at the base of the signal is the station master. Standing on the track with a shovel in his hand is the permanent way ganger. Standing on the footplate are the locomotive crew with the driver, typically wearing a white jacket and trousers, nearest the camera. Finally, on the platform is the train guard wearing his distinctive cross belt.
