Looking towards Coventry from the Birmingham end of the down
platform with the passenger waiting room on the right. In this later photograph
the half of the platform previously paved has been covered with tarmac. Both
platforms were built in the 1860s when the practice was to construct platforms
at a lower height than were required later in the century. To assist the
elderly and other passengers that might require assistance to step into a
carriage the railway companies provided steps. A set of three steps can be seen
behind the bench. As recounted elsewhere on the site this was my local station
and I can clearly remember the porter releasing homing pigeons from the down
platform at least once a month.
