Looking towards Coventry from the down platform with the
cantilevered signal box on the left. This photograph provides a perfect
illustration as to why the LNWR, together with other railway companies, adopted
staggered platforms when a road crossing was adjacent to the station. As can be
seen, the up local two-car DMU has passed through the crossing before stopping
at the station. This has meant that the gates can now be reopened to road
traffic thereby minimising the disruption to the local population. On the Trent
Valley line, frequency of closure resulted in the County Council taking the
LNWR to court and forcing the latter to build a bridge, a much more expensive
solution. Longer trains negated the benefit of the staggered crossing so by the
20th century this practice had ceased.
