The island platform was a substantial building as evident by the two chimneys which would have served at a porter's office plus in all probability two waiting rooms, one being a ladies waiting room. It was common for railways up to the First World War to provide ladies with their own waiting room which only children would be able to use. Whilst the gentlemen had to use an outside urinal, see the door in the end elevation facing the photographer, ladies were provided with en-suite toilet facilities. A porter can be seen stacking what appears to be pigeon baskets. It was not unusual to see porters release pigeons at a set time at stations as part of club competitions up to and including the 1960s.
