Two lady L&NWR Porters with hand lamps in their hands pose for the camera at Vauxhall station late in World War One. Ladies had to be employed in many jobs and in ever increasing numbers by the railway companies and the L&NWR was no exception. From 1917 onwards labour shortages became a major problem for the railways as their men left to serve in the armed forces. These ladies are employed in one of the better types of jobs, some ladies had to work as engine cleaners as can be seen in 'lnwrcs3854'. Photographer Arthur Revil.
