The pits alongside were used by the drivers to inspect underneath the locomotives as well as for firemen to rake out the fire from the firebox. Many late LMS and all British Railways locomotives were fitted with self-cleaning smokeboxes and rocking fire grates, ideas adopted from the USA Army locomotives seen operating in the UK during the Second World War. These labour saving devices radically improved the servicing of locomotives which was a major benefit in post-war Britain when labour was in very short supply.
