Ex-LNWR 7F 0-8-0 'G2a' No 49120 and ex-LMS 3MT 2-6-2T No
40076 are both seen in steam standing on shed on 28th September 1956. The 'G2a'
was commonly called by enginemen and enthusiasts a 'Super D' and reflected the
locomotives evolution in boiler design and the superheating applied. In the
photograph above its standing on the 'coal hole' road and the presence of the
long handled shovel leaning against the cab would indicate that it is being
serviced with ash being removed from the firebox. The five-plank wooden wagon
with its door open on the left is being used by the shed for storing and
ultimately shipping of the ash and clinker removed during the serving of
locomotives. Built at Crewe in May 1910 No 49120 was transferred to Nuneaton
shed following the closure of Milverton shed to be withdrawn from there in
August 1959 to be scrapped in September 1959 by Crewe works. The 3MT, No 40076,
was built at Crewe in March 1935 and remained in service until October 1961
when it was withdrawn from Bangor shed to be scrapped in January 1962 by
Horwich works.
