View of six sets of newly delivered Derby built Diesel
Multiple Units stored at the shed after its closure in preparation for driver
training. Driver training would have had to have been carried out in advance of
their operational introduction. When first introduced the unions insisted on a
second man, the fireman, to allocated on both DMUs and diesel locomotives on
the grounds of safety. This significantly nullified one of the advantages of
operating these vehicles and was a contributing factor in making secondary
routes vulnerable to the cost savings that Beeching instigated resulting in the
closure of thousands of miles of lines.
