LMS Route: Rugby to Wolverhampton
LMS Route: Birmingham-Soho-Perry Barr-Birmingham
Winson Green Station: lnwrwg2270
A Derby Lightweight DMU stands on the down platform and
ex-LMS 2-6-4T No 42309 on the Perry Barr route's up platform in 1955. The
station has still retained its passenger waiting room on the down platform on
the Wolverhampton route. The Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) was, it was hoped, be
the answer to the problem of competing with road transport on lower passenger
density routes. Diesel Multiple Units offered flexibility as they could operate
in two, three, four or six car configurations and only required two people to
operate it (although the second man in the cab - the fireman - did remain for
many years indicating the power of the union ASLEF). They were also considered
much cleaner although they were by no means pollution free.
