LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Lichfield
Wylde Green Station: lnwrwg3357a
Close up of image 'lnwrwg3357' showing the station's down
booking office on the left and the up booking office on the right. The
immediate difference between the two is that the up platform's later design
allowed the flat roof to project forwards in order to provide a canopy covering
the entire platform to the rails, whereas the 1862 design had a hipped roof
with only a slight overhang which ran around all four sides on the structure.
The local stopping trains were of fixed formation in that the carriages at the
Sutton Coldfield end of a train were for First Class passengers and the
carriages at the New Street end were for Third Class passengers. Notices
advising passengers where to stand can be seen above: a Third Class sign being
immediately behind the down platform's booking office sign and a First Class
sign being located adjacent to and opposite the booking office on the up
platform.
