LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham
Alcester Station: mra136a
Close up of image 'mra136' showing the two 10ft wheelbase,
unfitted, 12 ton ex-NE vans standing in Alcester's goods yard. The design was
originally used by the LNER for its first decade. The prototype had a wooden
chassis, which was unusual for vans by this time. Most were built without
vacuum brakes as seen above. Vans of this type were still in evidence into the
early 1960s, when the final cull of merchandise vehicles with wooden chassis
took place. Their successors, LNER standard ventilated vans were built on both
timber and steel underframes, fitted and unfitted, with spoked or disc wheels
and with timber or corrugated steel ends.
