LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham
Alcester Station: mra463c
This close up of image 'mra463' shows the original portion
of the station when first opened for passenger traffic on 17th September 1866,
goods traffic having commenced earlier on 16th June 1866. One theory why the
station building was extended so soon after opening was that it was to
accommodate the GWR branch line services to Bearley and Stratford upon Avon
which opened on 4th September 1876. Bob Essery states that the passenger
services of both the Midland and Great Western were not at all aligned to
connect with each other, that they were in essence separate services one with a
function to pass through Alcester, the other to terminate there.
