Close up of image 'mra470' showing the end of the double track through Alcester and the nature of the junction with the GWR's Bearley to Alcester branch line. The station layout was designed to minimise the number of facing points; such points could, in extreme situations, open and derail locomotives or rolling stock. The loop line on the right was therefore accessed only via the station's northbound line which, because of the route's single line, had to join with the through line via a facing point. The connection to the branch is still evident because whilst the line was closed to passengers on 25th September 1939; for goods, the official closure date was 1st March 1951.
