LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton
Arley & Fillongley Station: mraf1876
A pair of ex-LMS '8F' 2-8-0 locomotives are seen at the head
of a coal train from a local pit near Arley & Fillongley. The Warwickshire
Coalfield extended from Warwick to Tamworth and was 25 miles from the north to
the south with its width being approximately half that distance. Its western
margin is defined by the 'Western Boundary Fault'. In the northeast it
abuts against steeply dipping shales of Cambrian age. The larger part of the
outcrop at the surface consists of the Warwickshire Group of largely
coal-barren red beds.
