An internal view of Bournville shed's coaling stage showing the tubs used to tip the coal into the bunker or tender of locomotives. When loaded they would weigh approximately five to six hundredweight (cwt) each and would be emptied via a short 'bridge' which would be lowered at right angles to their current position in order to drop the coal directly into the bunker or tender. This 'bridge' was located at the opening seen above. The opening was also where the hosepipe was located which would have been in constant use during coaling in attempt for the water to damp down the choking coal dust.
