LMS Route: Birmingham West Suburban Railway

Bournville Shed: mrb1517

A view of Crab 2-6-0 No 42857 powering a semi-fitted express freight in the Birmingham direction, taken in 1953

Saltley based crab 2-6-0 No 42857 lets off steam as it passes Bournville signal box heading an up class D express freight in 1953. The Midland Railway lower quadrant signal being passed is older than the signal box, which was an LMS replacement built in 1932. Also in view is the connecting line to the engine shed on the right and the Lifford branch diverging behind the signal box on the left. Two railwaymen can be seen on the former, one watching the train go by and the other seemingly uninterested, carrying his bicycle. Built as LMS No 13157 by Crewe works in March 1930, it was renumbered by the LMS as No 2857 in October 1935 and again as No 42857 by British Railways in March 1949 which it carried until December 1962 when it was withdrawn from 9G Gorton shed to be scrapped.
