Birmingham New Street - Southern Approaches: mrbhm_sa1900

Looking towards Gloucester Junction with the line to New Street on the left and to Saltley on the right

Looking towards Gloucester Junction with the line to New Street on the left and to Saltley on the right on 22nd August 1954. The line to Saltley can be seen descending to pass under the former London & Birmingham Railway (L&BR) line from Euston to New Street (see image 'mrbhm_sa2325' for a view of the bridge) whilst the line to New Street starts to climb around Gloucester Junction (see image 'mrbhm_sa1899' for a view of the curve) to join the L&BR line by Grand Junction signal box. The bridge framing this scene is carrying Garrison Lane over the railway. Whilst mainly used by freight services working from Washwood Heath to Kings Norton and the West of England, some freight services were transferred to the GWR via Bordesley Junction. In addition to New Street to Gloucester passenger services being diverted via this route when engineering work on the West Suburban Railway was being carried out, a number of passenger services from Derby would bypass New Street by this route including during the summer the weekday Pines Express.
