Broom Junction Station: mrbj1319
Schematic drawing of Broom Junction station and the northern and
southern approaches. The layout of the station does not lend itself to the MR's
Banana trains being taken forward on to the SMJ line by the same locomotive.
Each train of Banana vans would need to be reversed into one of the two sets of
sidings located to the south of the station. An SMJ locomotive would be
standing at the south end of the siding ready receive the train. After being
coupled to the train of vans, the SMJ locomotive would then have to reverse the
train back out of the siding and through the junction and bridge before it
would then move forward on to the line to Stratford upon Avon. Trains of empty
vans would require this procedure to be reversed. This convoluted procedure
finally cease in 1942 when the south curve was built allowing trains to run
directly on to the Stratford upon Avon line.
