The station had opened on 1st November 1875 and remained operational until December 1940 although it officially closed on 27th January 1941. A few months later Brighton Road signal box was closed on 4th May 1941 when colour light IBS signals made its use redundant. During both the First and Second World Wars, it was quite normal for the railways to identify stations that were either lightly loaded or could be replaced by other forms of transport. This would release staff and resources which could be assigned to other duties or to replace staff who had volunteered for the services.
