British Railways Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 No 73003 approaches the station from Washwood Heath on an up express service in 1953. Built at Derby works in May 1951 No 73003 was to remain in service until December 1965 when it was withdrawn from 81F Oxford shed. The Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 was one of the standard classes of steam locomotives built by British Railways in the 1950s. They were essentially a development of the LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 ("Black Five") modified for post war conditions with a running plate fitted to the boiler, self-cleaning grate and smokebox, better valve gear and other fittings. In total some 172 were built.
