LMS 6P 4-6-0 No 6100 'The Royal Scot' complete with bell stands at the British Industrial Fair adjacent to the station

LMS 6P 4-6-0 No 6100 'The Royal Scot' complete with bell stands at the British Industrial Fair adjacent to the station. The locomotive was originally built as No 6152 'The Kings Dragoon Guardsman' but swapped identity with the original 6100 when it was in the shops for maintenance. The LMS had been invited to take part in the celebrations and tour of the USA as part of the Ohio & Baltimore Railway's celebration. The bell and large lamp was part of the standard equipment needed to operate on USA rails. Neither locomotive reverted to their original numbers retaining their adopted identities for life. Therefore the original 6100 later carried the BR running number of 46152 and was withdrawn from Carlisle in April 1965. The original No 6152 was built in August 1927 by North British Locomotive Company. In its new identity it carried the BR running number 46100 and was withdrawn in October 1962 from Nottingham (Midland) shed to be preserved. Both locomotives were rebuilt by Stanier and classified as 'converted' locomotives, an accountancy practice that enabled the LMS to write off 100% of the building cost against its revenue for the current year. Normally a new locomotive would be treated by the tax man as capital expenditure meaning the cost would be written off over a number of years thereby increasing the amount of tax paid in the current year.
